Now T*H*AT*S what I’m talking about!

While I was driving this past warm bright Sunday afternoon blasting Open de Gate, what do I look up & see but this billboard sparkling in the sun! It’s perfect timing, since spring is here, the days are sunnier & getting warmer, which all means of course, it’s Caribana soon!

This entry is for Hubby who told me to blog about this. It’s also for Christina, I know you’re wondering about band launching… so, ~ May 12: http://callaloo.net/

Nigger$ & Ho$

“Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”

In an effort to teach children to be tough and let things slide, parents & teachers say such expressions. But I have not found that to be true. Otherwise, I would not remember cruel things people have said to me. Words do hurt. And it’s quite apparent that it’s not just the sensitive among us that are deeply offended by critical & insulting remarks.

Imagine your dream sofa has just been delivered and you see its colour is labeled as “nigger brown”. This happened to a family near Toronto & was reported on CNN. Here’s Saturday’s front page article http://www.thestar.com/News/article/203096

It’s surprising to realize that more than 50 years have passed since the n word has been forbidden. You’d never know it.

It seems Don Imus’ long career has been built on causing controversy - I watched his 60 Minutes interview from 11 years ago last night.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/04/15/60minutes/main2685145.shtml

Since his “nappy headed ho’s” remark, everyone is looking at how much that word is actually used. It seems every once and awhile we are asking why is that word so prevalent in hip hop culture? Why are rappers still using it? And what about the deeper meaning, what should disturb us all, why do some men look at women that way? I feel sick when misogynist instances like this come up - does it make others besides me fearful? Seeing that Akon video clip emphasizes this. That he can grab a naive young girl, throw her around & simulate sex with her, toss her aside, & all the while be applauded for it is disgusting!!! This should deeply disturb self-respecting women out there! Women should be mortified to see another woman treated in such a way. She’s foolish enough to think bc he’s a celebrity, it must be alright what were doing, “ooh, look at me, I’m on stage with Akon!” Um, wake up all women out there who actually think this is a fabulous 15 minutes of fame. It’s 15 minutes of utter shame. To that girl who obviously has no proud female teaching her what a lady will & won’t do, I say the way he treated you is nothing to be proud of. Until they are taught this, young girls are clueless & blinded by celebrity, & they need to be told it’s meaningless.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
